BEASTdome/ CrossCurrents+
February 27 - February 29
BEASTdome, Bramall Music Building

BEAST presents a mini-festival of events with virtuoso bass singer Nicholas Isherwood (U.S./France) – well known for his performance as Lucifer in Stockhausen’s Licht series, and composer/instrument builder Dirk Johan Stromberg (Singapore/U.S.) whose work blurs the lines between electroacoustic instruments and art installations.

Thu 27 February

6.30–9pm: BOMble BEAST (Free)

As part of our BOMble BEAST series with Birmingham Open Media, Stromberg will speak informally about his work at the BOM cafe.

Venue: BOM Cafe

Fri 28 February

1–1.50pm: The Electric Voice / Part 1 (Free)

Nicholas Isherwood performs works from his specially commissioned Electric Voice project, including a world premiere by the Department of Music’s composition professor, Michael Zev Gordon.

Venue: Barber Concert Hall

7.30-9.30pm: The Electric Voice / Part 2 (Free)

Further performances from the Electric Voice, and other vocally inspired electronic music.

Venue: The Dome, The Bramall

Sat 29 February

6–7pm: Beneath the Dome

A concert of immersive electronic music and sound featuring works by BEAST composers Emma Margetson and Nikki Sheth.

Venue: The Dome, The Bramall

7.30-9.30pm: In-between Language Types

Dirk Stromberg explores shared artistic languages through collaborations with composers Do Kien Cuong and BEAST’s Scott Wilson, alongside filmmaker Clare Chong. He and Wilson draw upon soundscapes from Vietnam, feedback, psychedelic video and a set of musical building blocks from Anthony Braxton’s work on musical language types in creating spontaneous compositions and improvisations.
